The Island

Small, French, and better in the shoulder weeks.

St. Barth's sweet spot is January through April — the same island, restaurants and beaches as the late-December fortnight, at a fraction of the intensity and a considerably more sensible price. Most trips run 5–7 days. Low season runs June to November, when much of the island closes. There are no chain hotels, and villa-versus-hotel sets the budget.

St. Barth's is French in the way that matters: the bakeries are real, the wine lists are serious, and lunch is a two-hour institution rather than an interruption. It is also tiny. You can drive the island in forty minutes, which means the choice of where to base yourself is about beach character and privacy rather than distance from anything.

The island runs on a sharp calendar. The Christmas and New Year fortnight is a spectacle — superyachts in Gustavia, tables that were booked in June, prices that make sense to almost nobody. Either lean into that deliberately or avoid it entirely. The weeks either side deliver the same island at a fraction of the intensity, which is where we send most clients.

Villa Selection
The villa market here is deep and inconsistent. Views are oversold, road access is often understated, and the difference between a good rental agent and a bad one is the whole trip. We book through people we have used for years.

The Christmas and New Year fortnight is a different island: extraordinary, chaotic, and priced accordingly, with the best tables and villas gone eight months ahead. We will tell you honestly whether that is the week you actually want.

Getting There
The approach into St. Barth's is famously steep and the aircraft are small. The connection through St. Martin needs building properly, and the alternative — a private transfer by boat — is often the better answer with luggage or children.

The Table Problem
The restaurants that matter are small and book out. In season, a walk-in is not a plan. We hold the reservations that make an evening work, including the beach clubs that only take bookings through relationships.

Dry, warm and settled, with the island fully open and the December intensity gone. The best combination of weather, atmosphere and availability.

The Big Fortnight
Late December
Christmas and New Year, when the harbour fills and the island runs at maximum. Remarkable if it is what you want, and worth avoiding entirely if it is not. Book eight to twelve months out.
Low Season
June – November
Hot, humid, and within the hurricane belt. Many of the best properties and restaurants close outright, typically September and October. Cheap, but the island is not really itself.
