December through April is Jamaica's dry window, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Most trips run five to eight nights on one coast. Montego Bay's airport sits 50 road miles from Negril and 121 from Port Antonio, which is roughly ninety minutes against three and a half hours.
Jamaica has a mountain range down its middle, and that geography shapes a trip more than any hotel choice does. The four places people actually stay — Montego Bay and the Hanover coast west of it, Ocho Rios and Oracabessa, Negril at the western tip, and Port Antonio in the east — are not variations on one island. Different rainfall, different water, different room stock, different drives from the airport. Choosing between them is the hardest decision to undo once flights are ticketed.
The mistake I see most often is an itinerary that tries to hold two of them. Montego Bay for four nights and Port Antonio for three sounds balanced until you price the day it costs: 121 miles of coast road, three and a half hours each way, two check-ins inside one week. Jamaica rewards staying put and driving out for the day far more than it rewards moving base.
The culturally specific parts of Jamaica — the food, the music, the Blue Mountains, the river country in Portland — are not on the beach. Reggae went onto UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018, and the Blue and John Crow Mountains became Jamaica's first World Heritage Site in 2015. A week inside a resort gate is a good beach holiday and not a Jamaica trip. Decide which you want before you pick the property, because the two want different coasts.

Five nights in Portland: the Blue Lagoon early before the boats, Frenchman's Cove, a morning on a bamboo raft poled down the Rio Grande by one man, Reach Falls, jerk at Boston Bay where the technique was worked out. Then three nights in the Blue Mountains above Kingston at Irish Town, cold enough after dark to want a jacket, with a working coffee estate walk and, for anyone willing to start at two in the morning, the hike to Blue Mountain Peak for sunrise. Fly into Kingston for this one, not Montego Bay.

The South Coast, Slowly
Saint Elizabeth for people who do not want a resort and are honest about it. Five or six nights at Treasure Beach, where the hotels are small, the beaches are fishing beaches, and the community tourism model has run long enough to be real rather than a marketing line. A boat up the Black River through the morass to look for American crocodiles, an afternoon at YS Falls, the Appleton Estate distillery in the Nassau Valley, and the long ride out to the bar on stilts off Parottee Point. Add two nights on the Negril West End if you want a cliff and a sunset.

North Coast, With Kingston In It
The compromise that actually works, because one leg of it is a real road rather than a coastal crawl. Four or five nights between Ocho Rios and Oracabessa — Jamaica Inn for the old-Caribbean version, the Fleming estate for the other one — with Dunn's River at opening, the White River, and the turtle beach at Oracabessa in season. Then two nights in Kingston, an hour south on the tolled North–South highway: the National Gallery, Hope Road, Trench Town, dinner somewhere with nothing to do with tourism. Kingston is not a beach city. It is the only place on the island where the music is a working industry, not a soundtrack.

The Coast Decision, Made First
Before any property is discussed I want three things: how many people, how many nights, and whether anyone needs to be entertained. Those answers pick the coast, and the coast picks the shortlist. A family of nine on seven nights belongs in a Hanover villa forty minutes from the airport. Two people who came for rivers and rainforest belong in Portland and should fly into Kingston. Someone whose priority is the flattest, whitest beach in the region should be looking at Turks and Caicos instead. Getting this wrong costs the whole trip; getting the hotel wrong costs one night.
Villa With Staff, or Resort
Jamaica has the deepest staffed-villa stock in the Caribbean, and the format is nothing like a rental with a cleaner. A proper Jamaican villa comes with a cook, a housekeeper, a butler and often a gardener, all employed by the estate rather than the guest, and the cook shops for what your household actually eats. That is transformative for a group of eight and pointless for a couple, who pay for staff they spend the week avoiding. The break-even sits around six people, and photographs will not tell you which side of that line you are on.
Transfer Arithmetic
Jamaica's road network is better than it was and still not what a map implies. The tolled North–South highway that opened in 2016 runs 41 miles from the Kingston side to the north coast and turned the Kingston–Ocho Rios run into a comfortable hour. Everything else is coast road. Montego Bay to Negril is 50 miles and around ninety minutes; Ocho Rios is roughly 61 miles; Port Antonio is 121 miles and three and a half to four hours before you allow for weather or a market day. I build the arrival day around the transfer rather than pretending it is free.
Booking Against the Season Honestly
The Atlantic hurricane season is a real constraint and a badly discussed one. It runs June 1 to November 30, and the National Hurricane Center puts the statistical peak on 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. That is not a reason to write off half the year. It is a reason to change how you book in it: refundable or flexibly-dated rates, insurance bought at deposit rather than at final payment, and a property whose storm policy I have read rather than assumed. Travellers who book it as if it were February occasionally lose the trip.

The dependable window, and priced like it. Trade winds are steady, rainfall is lowest across the north and west coasts, and the sea is calm enough for a boat day. Christmas and New Year are their own market, with minimum-night requirements at almost every property worth having and villa weeks contracted a year out. February and March are the sweet spot: same weather, less pressure on the good rooms, no holiday minimums. If the trip involves a villa or more than six people, book this window six to nine months ahead.

The most underrated weeks on the Jamaican calendar. Rates drop hard after the middle of April, the sea is warm, and while the hurricane season technically opens on June 1, activity that early is historically light — the National Hurricane Center climatology puts the bulk of it after mid-August. What you accept is heat and humidity climbing through June and afternoon showers on the north coast that clear inside an hour. For a couple with flexible dates and no school calendar, late May and early June is the best value on this island.

The honest version: the statistical peak is 10 September, most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October, and the season closes on 30 November. Rates are lowest for a reason, some properties close for maintenance in September and October, and a named storm does not have to make landfall to cost three days of a seven-day trip. Still defensible for travellers who want the island quiet and are genuinely flexible; a bad booking for a fixed-date family trip on non-refundable flights. July and early November are the ends where odds and prices are both reasonable.

Portland is the greenest and furthest from the main airport, and the south coast around Treasure Beach is the least developed of the lot.
Further than the map suggests: Montego Bay to Negril is 50 road miles, Port Antonio is 121. In practice that is about an hour and a half to Negril, a little more to Ocho Rios at roughly 61 miles, and three and a half to four hours to Port Antonio on a two-lane coast road that passes through every town on the way. The one genuinely fast route is the tolled North–South highway, 41 miles between the Kingston side and the north coast, which makes Kingston to Ocho Rios about an hour. That single road is why a Kingston arrival is sometimes the better ticket. Transfer times move with weather and traffic; confirm yours before committing to flights.
Read the current government advisory yourself before you book, then plan around it rather than ignoring it. The United States publishes a country-level advisory for Jamaica with area-by-area detail at travel.state.gov, updated on its own schedule, so what was accurate last year may not be current. My practical position: use a vetted driver rather than a self-drive car, stay off unlit rural roads after dark, and treat Kingston the way you would treat any large city at night. The resort corridors and the villa coasts are not where the advisory's concerns sit, and pretending those concerns do not exist is not advice.
A staffed villa wins for groups of six or more; a resort wins for two people who want no logistics. Jamaica's villa tradition is unusually deep — cook, housekeeper and butler employed by the estate, menus built around what your group actually eats, a pool nobody else uses. For eight or ten people that means better food, more privacy and often a lower total than the equivalent resort rooms. The middle case is a family of four or five, where the decider is whether anyone wants kids' clubs and a beach with facilities.

Visa requirements depend on nationality and on the length and purpose of the stay, and the authoritative source is the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency rather than a hotel website or a previous traveller's experience. Airlines have been instructed to check the form at the gate, so it is a boarding requirement rather than an arrival formality. Passport validity rules also vary by nationality. The things worth the day are specific and local: a bamboo raft down the Rio Grande from Portland, the Black River morass and YS Falls from the south coast, a coffee estate walk if you are near Kingston. Jamaica Blue Mountain is a protected certification mark administered by the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority, and it applies only to beans grown inside a defined mountain area.
