May through September is the window, with October and November a genuine autumn alternative rather than a fallback. Most itineraries run 9–12 days. Combining England, Scotland and Ireland in under ten days does not work. In the Highlands and rural Ireland, hire the driver — the single-track roads demand the attention you should be spending on the landscape.

The UK and Ireland share a language and a sea, but travel very differently. England is country houses, garden tours, and London's restaurant renaissance. Scotland is single-track roads, whisky distilleries, and landscape on a scale that surprises first-timers. Ireland is the warmest welcome in Europe wrapped around the Atlantic's most dramatic coastline.

The planning skill is routing: these islands look small and drive slow. The classic mistakes are too many one-night stops and underestimating distances on rural roads. In the Highlands and rural Ireland, hire the driver. The single-track roads demand attention you should be giving the landscape, and a good driver-guide adds stories you can't rent a car with. In England's countryside, confident drivers do fine; we'll route around the stressful bits.

Honestly: two of the three in a standard trip. London plus Highlands, or Dublin plus the west coast, or London–Edinburgh by train. All three needs two weeks and a tolerance for travel days. We'll tell you which pairing makes sense for your dates.

The great ones, absolutely — Ashford Castle, Inverlochy, Ballyfin are experiences unto themselves. The key is room selection within the castle and knowing which 'castle hotels' are really conference venues with turrets. We know the difference.

May–June and September for the light and the midges' absence; August for Edinburgh's festivals if you book a year ahead. The Highlands in any season — the weather is part of the drama, and the hotels have fires for a reason.

Six months for summer travel and the great country houses; a full year for Edinburgh in August or Christmas at a castle. The islands' best rooms are few, and the world has discovered them.

Excellent — castles, falconry, boat trips, and pub gardens that welcome children. The UK and Ireland are the easiest European destinations for multigenerational trips; everyone finds their register.
